The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t always had that name. Originally, the ball club was known as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies. But in 1880, after stealing away second-baseman Louis Bierbauer from the Philadelphia Athletics, a local newspaper called the team “a bunch of pirates.” The nickname suited them just fine, and they’ve been flying the Jolly Roger ever since.

…prolly jes as well, when ya think on it. That there first one, they woulden a had many fans, cause no one would be spellin it right. Pirates be a durn sight easier, iffen ya ask me. An, wi’ every single one a them there clubs sendin out fliers an gift card stuff on t’ holidays, it shore fits better when they be printin it.
