Happy Holidays from Momma

Filed under: People — Momma @ 6:44 am

Welcome back!

It’s time to take a moment to reflect and examine what has occurred over that past year. Whether you stare out of windows covered with brocade draperies or bamboo shades, it’s all the same…. people are people, and your life is as important as any other. In this last year we have seen so much that it makes one wonder what the next one will hold. Do we face the New Year with fears about the economy and wars, or with the assurance that life will get better? Whichever viewpoint you choose to hold, I wish you the best of times in this coming year. And y’all don’t forget to visit us from time to time! Happy holidays from Momma and the rest of the Ozark clan.

Filed under: Art — Momma @ 6:53 am

Everyone knows the first video played on MTV. But what about VH1? Marvin Gaye’s version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” MTV2? “Where It’s At,” by Beck. And MTV Europe went with “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits.

…it all sound like nonsense ta me. I dunno who got t’ time ta sit an watch t’ television that much anyhow. Me, I been wore to a frazzle of late, dealin wi’ door ta door selling golks. They got a little a everthin’, they do. Jes yesterday, there were a man here tryin ta sell me car insurance, an t’ fact I don’ got no car didden shut him up none. Filed under: History — Momma @ 6:52 am

TRIVIA:

Parcheesi originated as a life-size game—the ruler of India played it in his garden, using pretty young women as the pawns. As for the “home” they moved toward? That was the center of the garden, where the emperor sat.

…fer some reason, movin folks around like that there puts me in mind a t’ store downtown an all that there modern furniture they be sellin. Cousin Henrietta done bought her a lamp what be shaped like a bare nekkid woman’s leg. I thought it looked jes awful, but ya cain’t tell that there woman nothin. Nothin at all.

How Engaging!

Filed under: People — Momma @ 6:45 am

TRIVIA:

Prior to 1938, engagement rings more often than not were comprised of a combination of the bride and her mother’s birthstones, which meant that sapphires, rubies, and emeralds were the order of the day.

…thought they still was. Goes ta show how fer behind I am, don’ it? Y’know, Cousin Mable’s oldest girl done got herself married to a valley boy las’ year, an he give her a choice atween a ring an a honeymoon at one a them there Outer Banks rentals places. I’d a took t’ ring, m’sel’, but that girl never did have no sense. She took t’ trip. Now she ain’t got nothin ta show ceptin t’ baby she had nine months later. Come ta think on it, mebbe she did git a good deal after all.

Oh, Niagra!

Filed under: Science — Momma @ 6:36 am

TRIVIA:

A famous North American landmark, Niagara Falls, is constantly moving backward. The rim was worn down about two and a half feet each year because of the millions of gallons of water that rush over it every minute. Attempts to control flow and divert the water has reduced erosion in recent years to one foot per year with the potential for one foot every ten years.

…hey, I heard a that there place afore. Couple years back, mebbe three, they was a man down valley way what were sayin he was givin away a trip ta there, an iffen ya bought the cheap auto insurance he were sellin, ya got a chance at it. Most folks figger it were rigged, cause t’ winner were someone no one never heard of round here. But I hear it’s real purty there. Cold, but purty.

…hmph. Talk bout a waste a money. They mus’ not have no more sense over in them ferrin spots then city folks does here. Ya kin tell it in t’ look a them anyhow, all little an skinny, cept fer them whatchacallit, sumo men folks. What someone oughter be teachin em is healthy cooking, ta git some meat on em, well, not them sumos. they be needin a diet, shore nuff.

‘We’ve Only Just Begun’, a # 2 smash hit for The Carpenters in 1970, was written and composed by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols as a commercial for a bank.

…never heard a none a them. Like t’ song though. Come ta think on it, I did usta know a Paul Williams, from over Simstown way. He tried ta set up a shop sellin’ term life insurance ta th’ farmers, but done wound up raisin pigs instead, jes like everbody else. Real nice man, that. His pigs is good too. Filed under: People — Momma @ 5:20 am

TRIVIA:

If your morning commute to work is 20 minutes or less, it’s below the national average. New Yorkers have some of the longest commutes, averaging 40 minutes.

…well, ain’t that a fit. My mornin’ commute be about twenty feet, t’ th’ coffee pot, then mebbe fifty more feet ta th’ barn. I knows a man what has a worse one, though. He be walking all over t’ hills sellin travel stuff, las vegas hotel reservations door ta door. I never really gave it much thinkin time though. Don’ see why folks wanna waste so much a they time… must be city folks, most as likely.
