Japanese contributions

Filed under: History — admin @ 3:14 pm

TRIVIA:

The word "honcho" comes from a Japanese word meaning "squad leader" and
first came into usage in the English language during the American
occupation of Japan following World War II.

….y’ know, y’ got me on that there one. I woulda swore it come from
down Mexico way, an I coulda swore we had been a hearin that word a lot
longer n’ that. But I guess m’ memry ain’t what it usta was, either.

Wedded Bliss

Filed under: History — admin @ 3:11 pm

TRIVIA:

The term "honeymoon" is derived from the Babylonians who declared mead,
a honey-flavored wine, the official wedding drink, stipulating that the
bride’s parents be required to keep the groom supplied with the drink
for the month following the wedding.

…mughta knowed it come from somewheres ferrin an heahten. Don’ matter,
I reckon. Round here most folks ain’t got no time fer fancy weddin trips
noways. They jes do they honeymoonin t’ home when the work be aall done
at t’ end a th’ day.

Seafaring wisdom

Filed under: Books and Stuff — admin @ 3:08 pm

TRIVIA:

The right side of a boat was called the starboard side due to the fact
that the astronavigators used to stand out on the plank (which was on
the right side) to get an unobstructed view of the stars. The left side
was called the port side because that was the side that you put in on at
the port.

…well, leastaways that make some sense, not like somma hese other ones
I been readin. But it be plain they ain’t never seed a little rowboat,
cause a boat like th’ one out by t’ pond there ain’t got none a that, an
it don’ matter which side ya put in on, an there ain’t no port noway.
But at least it make some sense.

A matter of expression

Filed under: Animals, Books and Stuff — admin @ 2:47 pm

TRIVIA:

The phrase "raining cats and dogs" originated in 17th Century England.
During heavy downpours of rain, many of these poor animals unfortunately
drowned and their bodies would be seen floating in the rain torrents
that raced through the streets. The situation gave the appearance that
it had literally rained "cats and dogs" and led to the current
expression.

…well, ain’t that a fit. A nasty one. I never knowed where it come
from er I never woulda ben usin it. Seems like I do recollect some other
story, bout back when roofs was all thatch an low ta th’ groun’, that
cats n dogs could climb up there, but rain washed em down an they be
fallin everwhere. I like my story better, I reckon. That there one is
terble.
